Pull onions

The onion is very versatile and healthy. You can grow them both in the garden and in the flower pot. Note the following:

  • Growing onions: you plant them directly in the ground.
  • The bulbs are planted in spring, summer or winter, but not in autumn.
  • Harvest occurs four months after planting.
  • If you want to plant the onions in the flower pot, you must ensure that it has a capacity of at least three liters of water and a minimum depth of 20 cm.
  • If you want to plant the bulbs in the garden, you should do so with a space of 15 cm between each plant. And with a distance of 40 cm between the lines.
  • As for the soil, it should be abundant for the bulbs to grow properly. Humus or a mixture with peat are great. Soils that are too sandy or loamy are not suitable.
    • This plant takes potassium and phosphorus from the earth, but not nitrogen.  This is why it is advisable to use a good layer of compost for the garden or flower pot before planting.
    • Onions love a sunny spot, especially when the tuber is forming.

    • The onion requires very little water, only a little more in the vegetation stage, ie before the tuber forms. You shouldn’t water the plant about 20 days before harvest.
    • Harvest occurs as soon as the tips of the leaves are yellow, bend or begin to die. Then the onion is ripe. To remove the tuber from the soil, use a rake, being careful not to damage the skin. The onions are then left half underground for a few more days. Then you should take them out of the ground and dry them in the sun for two weeks.
    • First, however, you should remove weeds from the onions. Radical differences in humidity should be prevented.
    • The ideal temperature during the growth phase is 15 to 25 ° C. The plant gets along well with other plants such as strawberries, carrots, cucumbers and tomatoes. It is better not to mix it with legumes.

Pull the onion and the three growing phases:

    • At the end of summer:  the seeds are sown in well-defined rows. Spread the seeds as well as possible in the flower pot. Then cover with 1.5 cm of compost and press the soil down a little.
    • In winter:  In cold winters with heavy snowfall, it is advisable to first grow small plants and store them in the glass house or in the house. You can then move these small onions in spring. This is done in the dry soil in the prepared furrows.
    • In spring:  when the summer is damp and fresh or there is no space to store the onions, this time of year is recommended. Place the plants at a distance of 10 cm as soon as they are about 10 cm in size. It is best to plant tubers instead of seeds in spring. Simply prepare approx. 15 cm deep holes in a line and bury the tubers in them. Press the earth down a little.

How do you plant onions in pots?

If you don’t have enough space for a garden, you can also grow the bulbs in flower pots on the patio, balcony or in the courtyard. It’s a lot easier than you think. Simply prepare the soil well and choose suitable pots.

Choose good, organic, as dark as possible soil and fill the flower pots with it. You can get this soil from the gardener, for example.

Under no circumstances use fertilizer, although this will cause the plant to grow faster, but it is not recommended for health. If you are growing vegetables at home, it should also be as healthy as possible.

If the soil is very dry and clumpy, or if it is too light, you can mix it with a darker soil. Before you start planting, you should wait about two weeks.

The pot should be at least 20 cm deep and 30 cm wide. When the seeds are sown, a distance of 15 cm should be allowed for, otherwise the bulbs will have no room to grow.

If you grow small plants first, you can put them in the pot as soon as they are about four inches high.

Watering is done every other day for the first two months. As already mentioned, the onions needed a sunny spot. After about four months, the onions are ready.

Take care of the plants daily to see if they need water. In time you will become an expert.
