Make a snow globe yourself as a bottle of calm

Surely you also had a snow globe as a child and loved it, right? Your children will love it too, especially if you together make a very personal snow globe for everyone . A snow globe is also ideal as a self-made gift idea for friends or family.

Snow globe and bottles of calm calm children

Whether you call it a snow globe or a bottle of calm, the effect on your child is the same: when you watch artificial snow or glitter settle in the glass, it calms down. The pedagogue Maria Montessori therefore recommended making an oversized snow globe as a “bottle of calm”.

With this bottle of calm you can calm down every angry child and relax in stressful situations, according to the pedagogue.

While the child watches the glitter or snow as it slowly lays down on the bottom of the bottle or snow globe , the child’s blood pressure also drops and they become calmer and more relaxed.

The manufacture of a bottle of rest or a snow globe is the same, only the size and shape are different. There is no room for figures in a bottle, but the effect on an excited, stressed or angry child is the same. It’s up to you whether you want to make a bottle of calm or a snow globe.

We explain how to do it:

preparation

Make sure that all of the items you use for handicrafts are absolutely clean so that the water stays clear and doesn’t become cloudy. If you use figures made from FIMO, you should also buy “water clear” in the craft shop to ensure that the water does not become cloudy. You need:

  • 1 jar (jam jar or bottle) made of clear glass
  • Distilled water
  • Glycerin (or colorless, crystal clear shower gel)
  • Artificial snow, glitter, sequins
  • Small figures or objects
  • Hot glue gun

When choosing the figure, make sure that it firstly fits through the opening of the glass or bottle neck and secondly is small enough to really close the container tightly. Also make sure that colored glitter or sequins can rub off, so be sure to try it out beforehand!

Glycerine or shower gel are there to ensure that the snow or glitter slowly sinks to the bottom. Glycerin is the cleanest solution, shower gel the alternative if you can’t get glycerin (in the pharmacy).

Colored shower gel can also look beautiful, especially if you want to create a colorful bottle of calm. Alternatively, use food coloring, but use it sparingly.

Place the figure

Place the figure on the lid of the jar or bottle and try out whether it is clearly visible even when the container is unscrewed. Often the edge is too high and you cannot see the whole figure in the later snow globe.

The best solution is to glue the figure on a small base. Lids of beverage bottles or small pieces of styrofoam that look like snow are good for this. Try to see if the figure with the base still fits in the container and it still closes tightly.

Only then use hot glue to glue the figure to the base and the base to the lid of the jar or bottle. If you still want to design the bottom of the lid, make sure to leave at least a 5mm edge in order to be able to close the glass tightly.

Prepare liquid

Warm the distilled water and fill the glass or bottle about halfway with it. Only then add glycerine or shower gel, but leave about 2cm of “air” to the edge, because you still need space for your figure and the glitter or artificial snow!

Then fill in glitter, artificial snow, sequins or something similar. One spoon per glass is usually sufficient. It is possible that the “snow” floats on the surface of the water, so stir gently until the liquid, snow and / or glitter have combined.

Then carefully put on the lid with the figure glued in. Is there still air in the glass or the bottle? Then carefully fill up with distilled water. If the filling quantity is correct, glue the screw top with hot glue so that your child cannot accidentally loosen it.

Fine tuning

If you want, you can personalize the finished snow globe or the finished bottle of calm. For example, you can cut out a photo of your child’s favorite animal and stick it on the back of the bottle / glass.

You can now decorate the outside of the glass or bottle by painting or writing on it, tying a nice bow around the neck of the bottle or the thread, sticking stickers or labels or writing or sticking a personal message on the lid.
