Make energy bars yourself: this is how it works
Generally, energy bars are made from grains, which provide extra energy due to their high content of complex carbohydrates. In addition, the finished product is compact, which makes the energy bars ideal for on the go, for example when you need them before or after exercise.
Although cereals are the main ingredient in energy bars, they often contain other ingredients that are high in complex carbohydrates, such as nuts and fruits. Finally, a liquid ingredient is also used to make the bars, which helps bind all the ingredients together: honey, yogurt, butter, etc.
On the other hand, the energy bars can be produced in different ways; this depends on the time you have available for the preparation and of course on your taste. There are some bars that you have to bake in the oven, while others can be conveniently made in the microwave or refrigerator.
Below are three recipes for homemade energy bars.
Baked energy bars
ingredients
- ½ cup of almonds
- ½ cup of walnuts
- 1/2 cup raisins
- 2 cups of oatmeal
- 2 cups of wheat flakes
- 1 cup of rye flakes
- ½ cup of chia and sesame mixture
- 200 grams of honey
preparation
- First chop the nuts. It is important that you do not crush them; This can cause the bar to crumble in your hands after baking. Therefore, it is better to use them in small pieces.
- In the next step, mash the grain.
- Then place the grain, nuts, and chia seeds in a bowl and mix well.
- By gradually adding the honey, you ensure that the ingredients form a sticky mass. Make sure to stir the mixture well as you add the honey.
- Then spread the mixture on parchment paper, which you can lay out in a mold or on a baking sheet. Place another parchment paper on top of the mass and use your hands or a small cutting board to press the surface smooth.
- Then put your energy bars in the oven, where you bake them at 150-170ºC for about 20 to 25 minutes. Make sure to check the bars from time to time: don’t let the dough harden too much.
- Finally, take the bars out of the oven, then wait for them to cool to cut into pieces of any size.
Make energy bars yourself: Without an oven
ingredients
- 25 dried figs
- 100 g cereals (mix of muesli, oats, etc.)
- 25 g nuts (walnuts, almonds or hazelnuts, depending on what you like)

preparation
- First, mash the figs into a thick paste until there are no lumps left.
- Then, in a bowl, mix the figs and honey together, stirring, until well mixed.
- Then mash a little more than half of the grain and nuts.
- Then add the nuts and grains to the fig and honey mixture and stir well.
- Then, spread the mixture out in a square or rectangular container. Make sure to shape the mixture until you get a smooth and elongated rectangular mass. You can also put some parchment paper on the mass and then press them into shape with your hands or with a small cutting board until they have a smooth surface.
- Then cut the mass into smaller pieces that will later form your energy bars.
- Finally, separate the rule, then sprinkle the rest of the grains and nuts over each bar.
