These substances play an important role in many cell metabolic processes and are also involved in protein synthesis. There are numerous disorders that alter the normal purine cycle. For example, if urinary excretion is disturbed, diseases associated with high uric acid levels, such as gout, develop.

While gout is the most common disease it causes, it is not the only one. There are many disorders that can have more serious consequences than gout.

An appropriate diet is therefore particularly important for people who are predisposed to high uric acid levels. Foods rich in purine include the following, for example. 

  • Meat in general: beef, pork, game meat, poultry
  • Seafood, for example lobster or mussels
  • Liver, sweetbreads and kidneys  in general
  • Fish,  such as smoked salmon or anchovies

If there are problems with purine metabolism, it is best to avoid these foods. It is also very important to drink a lot to get rid of uric acid. A healthy weight is also important. In addition, you should avoid alcohol.
