In technical jargon, the pathological occurrence of varicose veins is called varicose veins. The unsightly veins can usually be found on the legs, but they can also appear on the face or other places.

Usually they initially cause no symptoms and are not a health risk.  W hen the suffering but progresses, itching, burning, or even more serious complications can arise.

How do varicose veins develop?

Varicose veins are largely genetic, but certain measures help in prevention. You should pay special attention to these factors:

  • History of blood clots
  • Clothing that is too tight
  • Problems with blood circulation

You will then find useful tips against varicose veins that you should consistently implement in everyday life if you want to be successful with them.

1. Improve blood circulation through exercise

Exercise helps with varicose veins

Good blood circulation in the legs is essential and for that you need regular exercise. It doesn’t have to be strenuous exercise, but you need to be consistent!

For example, we recommend the following forms of movement:

  • Walking : Go for a walk every morning and every evening; if you have a dog you will be forced to do so, which is very good for your health.
  • Ride your home trainer or bike for 25 minutes in the great outdoors every day.
  • Do chores that require you to move around or walk a lot.
  • Use the stairs instead of the elevator or escalator at least twice a day .

Not only can you do something against varicose veins, but you can also stay fit and healthy.

2. Wear compression stockings against varicose veins

Compression stockings help against varicose veins

You can also easily implement this tip.

Compression stockings improve blood circulation in the legs by providing the necessary support. They are available in medical supply stores and well-stocked department stores with low, high and medium compression. So that you can choose the right stockings for you, you should consider the following points.

  • Low compression (class 1).  Ideal if you have only a few or small varicose veins. These stockings are actually almost like normal tights. You can wear them for just a few hours or all day, whichever is most comfortable for you.
  • Medium compression (class 2).  We recommend this compression strength if the varicose veins are already clearly visible, but not yet large. Wear them for at least 6 hours a day, especially if you stand a lot or can’t move a lot.
  • High compression (class 3 and 4).  You should use this if you already have highly visible varicose veins and bruises for no apparent cause. Wear them all day if possible.

You may find that wearing compression stockings is a little uncomfortable at first, especially when it comes to class 3 or 4 compression stockings with high or very high compression. If you want, you can only wear them for a few hours at first and then gradually increase the wearing time every week until you feel more comfortable.

You don’t need a doctor’s prescription for compression stockings, you can buy them in specialist shops, where they can also give you additional advice. It is best to wash them by hand or on the delicate program with a mild detergent.

The price is usually a little higher than normal tights because they are used for medical purposes and have to last a long time. You will see that it is worth buying.

If you don’t want to wear compression stockings, you can bandage your legs, which has a similar effect. This is an inexpensive, but somewhat more cumbersome and impractical alternative.

3. Elevate your legs!

Put your legs up if you have varicose veins

Another way to get better blood circulation in your legs is to keep them elevated for a few minutes. Here are a few tips:

  • In bed, prop your legs against the wall or place them on several pillows.
  • Sit or lie down on an armchair and put your legs over the armrest.
  • Sit on the floor and put your feet on the seat of a chair.

It is important to keep your legs in this position for a maximum of 20 minutes and then slowly lower them again so that you do not injure yourself. Under no circumstances should you sleep in such a position, because as soon as you lower your legs again you will feel severe pain as the blood flows rapidly downwards.

Raise your legs at least once as described. If you already have many and large varicose veins, it is best to raise your legs three times a day.

Implement these tips in your everyday life to maintain your health!
