Why is the right combination of foods so important?

With a healthy combination of different ingredients, you can achieve the following benefits:

  • Faster and better digestion without heartburn, gas formation or flatulence,
  • less tiredness after eating and more energy in general,
  • easier regulation of body weight (regardless of whether you want to lose or gain weight),

In the long term, you can also alleviate chronic complaints with the right combination of ingredients.

Unhealthy food combinations

You should avoid these combinations as much as possible  to maintain your health. It is also important not to use too many ingredients for one dish – remember the motto when cooking: less is more!

The following unhealthy food combinations can affect your health:

1. Melon and watermelon

unhealthy food combinations: melon and watermelon

Melons of all kinds are very popular as a dessert or in between, especially in summer. Often these fruits are also combined with salty foods, but this is a mistake!

Melons consist largely of water and also contain an abundance of fiber, vitamins and minerals. They are wonderfully refreshing and tasty.

Remember, however, that any type of melon is best eaten on an empty stomach, alone. The combination with other ingredients is not recommended.

  • Melons are healthiest in the morning on an empty stomach or as a morning or afternoon snack. But as already mentioned: always alone! You shouldn’t drink water with it either.

2. Protein and starch

The combination of protein and starchy foods is not recommended because it slows digestion and makes you gain weight.

  • Protein-rich foods: meat, fish, eggs, milk and dairy products, legumes, dried fruits and seeds.
  • Starchy foods: all kinds of cereals and cakes (pasta, bread, sweets), potatoes, rice, certain types of cooked vegetables (pumpkin, carrot, beetroot, artichoke, corn, peas …).

Meat with potatoes is a classic, but not the healthiest combination. Protein and starchy foods are best paired with salad or raw vegetables.

3. Milk and dairy products

unhealthy food combinations: milk and dairy products

Milk and dairy products are rich in protein, but they  should not be combined with other foods. If you have digestive problems, it is especially important not to combine milk with other ingredients.

  • Dairy products such as yogurt or cheese should not be combined with starchy foods.
  • Mixing yoghurt and sugar is also by no means recommended!

4. Fruit in main courses or as a dessert

A piece of fruit for dessert is a common habit, but especially if you have consumed starchy products, you should refrain from it. The fructose can cause stomach and digestive problems.

  • An exception can be made when combining meat or fish with salads  (without potatoes and without other starchy foods). In this case, the protein can be combined with pineapple or papaya, because these two fruits contain enzymes that aid the digestive process.

For the same reason, you should avoid fruit juices (which contain even more sugar) when eating.

    5. Different types of proteins

One protein-rich food per meal is sufficient. It is not advisable to combine different foods with proteins,  such as some meat and legumes.

Every food has different properties and functions. However, the combination can impair certain natural processes.

    6. Vegetables are not suitable in every combination

Vegetables can be combined in many ways, but some compositions are less recommended:

    • milk
    • sweet fruit
    • Melons of all kinds
    • sugar

    7. Water with food

unhealthy food combinations: water with meals

It is well known that water is very important, you should drink 1 – 2 liters of it every day. Many have a habit of drinking water with their main meals, but this combination is not recommended.

It’s best to drink the water throughout the day outside of meals. Otherwise, digestion can be disturbed and flatulence can occur.

Don’t forget  to drink at least one glass of water every morning on an empty stomach. You should also consume water on an empty stomach in the mornings and afternoons.
